Horticulture IAI Recommendations
Horticulture prepares students for careers in horticultural crop production, greenhouse and nursery management, retail floriculture, garden center management, and floral design. Completing the recommended courses below will help ensure a smooth transfer between Illinois institutions. Be sure to consult with your academic advisor early and regularly as you plan your educational path.

Horticulture Core Courses (17-19 semester credits)
Agricultural Courses
AG 905 - Introduction to Horticulture (3 semester credits).
AG 912 - Introduction to Floral Design (3 semester credits). In addition, students should select additional Agriculture core courses in consultation with an Agriculture advisor from the following page: Agriculture Electives.
Non-Agricultural Courses
CHM 912 - General Chemistry II with Laboratory (4-5 semester credits)
BIO 910- Introduction to Biological Sciences (4-5 semester credits)
NOTE: Students may take both CHM 912 and the second course in the sequence of BIO 910 if the student chooses. This may help students be more prepared for the scientific rigors of the baccalaureate major.
Other Recommendations by the Agriculture major panel:
Recommended Prerequisite: All agriculture majors need to be computer literate. You must be able to negotiate an operating system such as OS/2, DOS, or Windows; access the Internet; and use word processing, database and spreadsheet software. If you cannot do this, first take:
AG 913 - Introductory Microcomputer Skills in Agriculture (0-3 semester credits)
Agriculture - Horticulture IAI GECC Recommendations (Minimum 37 semester credits)
These are the specific courses in the Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC) that should be taken for this emphasis.
Communication: 3 courses (9 semester credits)
Select a two-course sequence in writing (6 semester credits) with a grade of "C" or better and, Select 1 course in oral communication (3 semester credits).
Mathematics: 1 course (3 semester credits)
Select at least 1 course in consultation with an Agriculture advisor from - College-level Calculus, M1 902: General Education Statistics, Finite Mathematics
Recommended - a second course in math.
Physical and Life Sciences: 2 courses (7-8 semester credits)
Select from Physical Sciences - General Education Chemistry with Laboratory or General Education Physics with Laboratory.
Select from Life Sciences - General Education Biology with Laboratory.
(The Physical and Life Sciences requirements can also be satisfied by the first course in the Chemistry sequence and the second course in the Biological Sciences sequence, respectively, from the Illinois Baccalaureate Majors' Recommendations).
Humanities and Fine Arts: 3 courses (9 semester credits)
Select 1 course from Humanities, Select 1 course from Fine Arts and Select 1 from either Humanities or Fine Arts. - Courses can be taken from the same identifier as long as the course outcomes are different.
Social and Behavioral Sciences: 3 courses (9 semester credits)
Select 3 courses from at least 2 different disciplines (e.g., no more than 2 courses from, for example, psychology). - Courses can be taken from the same identifier as long as the course outcomes are different.
Recommended: Principles of Macroeconomics.
