What Is the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI)?
The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) is a statewide transfer agreement that helps students move smoothly among participating Illinois colleges and universities. Established through a partnership of the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB), and Illinois colleges and universities, IAI provides a framework for transferring approved general education and selected major courses.
Faculty-led General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) and Major panels develop and maintain statewide course approval criteria, learning objectives, and major recommendations. These panels review courses submitted by participating institutions to ensure they meet IAI standards for content, quality, and transferability.
How Does IAI Benefit Students?
IAI helps students transfer credits efficiently while reducing the risk of losing coursework. Students who complete the Illinois General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) at a participating institution satisfy the lower-division general education requirements at other participating institutions, although additional upper-division or institution-specific requirements may still apply.
For students who have selected a major but not a transfer institution, IAI Major recommendations identify lower-division coursework commonly required across participating institutions, helping students prepare for upper-division study and make informed course selections.
How Do Institutions Participate?
More than 100 public and private, two-year and four-year Illinois institutions voluntarily participate in IAI. Participating institutions nominate faculty to serve on GECC and Major panels, submit courses for review, implement approved transfer recommendations, and collaborate to strengthen statewide transfer opportunities.
