Credits for Career and Technical Education

The Students Occupationally and Academically Ready (SOAR) Program enables qualified high school students enrolled in approved Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs of Study to earn college credit while in high school. SOAR credits may be applied toward related certificates, diplomas, or degree programs at participating Illinois community colleges and other post-secondary institutions.

By aligning high school and college coursework, the SOAR Program helps students accelerate their education, reduce the time required to complete a credential, and transition more efficiently into college and career pathways.

How do Credits for Career and Technical Education (CTE) work with the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI)?

Career and Technical Education (CTE) credits, including those earned through programs such as SOAR, do not typically fulfill Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) requirements. In some cases, however, they may apply toward major, elective, certificate, or career pathway requirements at the receiving institution.

The transfer and application of CTE credit varies by institution and may depend on existing articulation agreements between the institution where the credit was earned and the institution to which a student transfers. Students are encouraged to consult with advisors, transfer specialists, and admissions representatives at both institutions to understand how their credits may be evaluated and applied toward their educational goals.

Because policies and agreements vary, early planning and consultation can help ensure students maximize the value of their earned credits.
