Mathematics - IAI Major Course Recommendations

Bachelor's degree programs in Mathematics prepare students for a wide range of careers by developing analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of complex mathematical concepts and structures. Students planning to earn a bachelor's degree in Mathematics are strongly encouraged to complete an Associate in Arts (A.A.) or Associate in Science (A.S.) degree before transferring. To enter a Mathematics program as a junior, students should complete at least 60 semester credit hours. Because admission to some programs is competitive, completion of the recommended coursework does not guarantee admission.

Some institutions require a grade of C or higher in mathematics, chemistry, and engineering science courses for transfer credit. Students should consult their intended transfer institution to confirm transfer requirements, course equivalencies, and degree expectations.

Mathematics IAI Major Recommendations

Major Course Recommendations (13-19 semester credits)

Mathematics Calculus Core Course | 10-15 semester credits

MTH 901 - Calculus I (4-5 semester credits) - Also meets IAI GECC requirement in mathematics.
MTH 902 - Calculus II (3-5 semester credits)
MTH 903 - Calculus III (3-5 semester credits)

Important Note: Students are strongly encouraged to complete the entire Calculus sequence at a single institution before transferring. Because course content, sequencing, and credit hours can vary significantly among institutions, completing the sequence at one school is the best way to ensure that both course content and transfer credit are preserved.

Choose one mathematics course from below (with Linear Algebra preferred):

MTH 911 - Introduction to Linear Algebra (3-4 semester credits)
MTH 912 - Differential Equations (3-4 semester credits)
These courses will transfer to bachelor degree-granting colleges and universities, however students are advised to check with an advisor to determine whether they will transfer as coursework in the major or as general elective coursework.

Additional Recommended Courses 3-4 semester credits

PHY 911 - Calculus-based Physics I (3-4 semester credits)
CS 911 - Computer Science I (3-4 semester credits)

Students majoring in Mathematics are encouraged to complete a structured, higher-level programming course that requires Calculus I as a prerequisite. Computer programming provides valuable skills that support advanced study in mathematics and related fields.

Although these courses generally transfer to bachelor's degree-granting institutions, they may apply either toward the major or as elective credit, depending on the receiving institution. Students should consult an advisor and their intended transfer institution to determine how the course will be applied to their degree program.

Mathematics IAI GECC Recommendations (Minimum 37 semester credits)

These are the specific courses in the Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC) that should be taken for this emphasis.

Communication: 3 courses (9 semester credits)
Select a two-course sequence in writing (6 semester credits) with a grade of "C" or better and, Select 1 course in oral communication (3 semester credits).

Mathematics: 1 course (3 semester credits)
Select from IAI GECC Mathematics M1 900-1: College-level Calculus I.

Physical and Life Sciences: 2 courses (7-8 semester credits)
Select 1 course from Physical Sciences. Select 1 course from Life Sciences. Select at least 1 laboratory course. (Students with the appropriate preparation may substitute an initial course designed for science majors for a more general course.) Recommended: P2 900L: Calculus-based Physics I is strongly recommended as the appropriate course for Physical Sciences

Humanities and Fine Arts: 3 courses (9 semester credits)
Select 1 course from Humanities, Select 1 course from Fine Arts and Select 1 from either Humanities or Fine Arts. - Courses can be taken from the same identifier as long as the course outcomes are different.

Social and Behavioral Sciences: 3 courses (9 semester credits)
Select 3 courses from at least 2 different disciplines (e.g., no more than 2 courses from, for example, psychology). - Courses can be taken from the same identifier as long as the course outcomes are different.

Check the worksheet to see what courses you can take to fulfill your general education requirements. The worksheet allows you to see what courses to take to fulfill the IAI Gen. Ed. package (Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum) at any participating college or university in the State. You will find it helpful to use the major recommended general education courses shown above. You may want to print or copy a hard copy of this page.
