English/EGL - IAI Major Course Recommendations
Bachelor's degree programs in English typically focus on literature, literary analysis, and critical writing. Many institutions also offer concentrations in creative writing, technical writing, or teacher preparation for secondary English education. Students planning to earn a bachelor's degree in English are strongly encouraged to complete an Associate in Arts (A.A.) or Associate in Science (A.S.) degree before transferring. To enter an English program as a junior, students should complete at least 60 semester credit hours. Because admission to some programs is competitive, completion of the recommended coursework does not guarantee admission.
Students should consult their intended transfer institution to confirm course equivalencies, transfer policies, and program requirements.
Note to Faculty and Course Submitters working with IAI Courses:
Before submitting to the GECC Humanities and Fine Arts panel (where the English courses reside within IAI), please review the panel criteria and other important documents which are available at
English IAI Major Recommendations
Important Note: The English Major Panel recommends that students satisfy the Humanities and Fine Arts portion of the General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) with courses outside of the English major recommendations. This allows literature courses taken for the major to count toward major requirements rather than general education requirements. To fulfill the GECC Humanities and Fine Arts requirement, students may choose additional literature courses or any other approved General Education Humanities and Fine Arts course.

H3 912 Survey of British Literature I (3 semester credits)

H3 914 Survey of American Literature I (3 semester credits)
Competency in a Foreign Language Recommended - 12-16 semester credits

Other Recommendations - 3 semester credits
It is recommended that students interested in an English major also consider completing H3 915 Survey of American Literature II (3 semester credits). As disciplines within the English major are writing intensive, students pursuing the major may want to consider taking literature courses which have a significant writing requirement (9 to 12 pages in total of writing). This will assist students with requirements as they work towards their bachelor's degrees at universities.
