Serving on a Panel

What is the approximate time commitment per semester?

  • Usual – In general, panels meet once in the spring and once in the fall (usually March/April and October/November). In addition to attending a meeting or participating in a conference call (format tends to depend on the panel and amount of business they have for the semester), time is spent reviewing submitted courses in WebReview. It‘s hard to say how much time this takes as it will vary depending upon the reviewing faculty member‘s approach and the number of courses submitted each semester for the panel(s).
  • Ongoing Review – This process is ongoing. Conference calls, web conference, and additional email correspondence may be the way some panels choose to handle the increased load, but again that will vary from panel to panel.

What Travel is Required? Can I attend a meeting remotely if I can't travel for some reason?

  • Almost all panel meetings are held in central Illinois (Springfield, Lincoln, or Bloomington) in order to try to accommodate members coming from the north and south. In-person participation is requested, but we understand that many schools are facing travel restrictions due to ongoing budgetary constraints within the state. Conference calls and web conferences are available for all the GECC panels.  The availability of web conferences varies depending on major panel.  
    • Keep in mind that the IAI Policies and Procedures Manual indicates that panel members missing three consecutive meetings may be removed from the panel.
  • Technology Used If Meeting Virtually – Conference calls are always available at regular panel meetings.  However, web conferencing may not be available.  This depends on what‘s available at the meeting location and who is facilitating the meeting.

Is there a process in place by which panel members are reimbursed for travel expenses?

  • It is the participating school‘s responsibility to cover travel costs/reimbursements. Given the importance of IAI to our students, IAI representatives had many discussions with appropriate staff indicating the need for institutions to allocate a small amount of travel money to send their IAI panel members to all panel  m eetings.

What are the possible decisions a panel can make on courses?

Returned: Course needs reworking to be considered a match for the IAI descriptor.  Requires full panel review so resubmission with new or additional information waits until the next review session.  Courses not approved in the review process can be resubmitted to the panel via the iManage system by the institutional submitter.

Needs More Information: Course has some items either missing from the submission or requires a couple of items to be addressed before approval for the IAI descriptor.  Requires full panel review so resubmission with new or additional information waits until the next review session.  Courses not approved in the review process can be resubmitted to the panel via the iManage system by the institutional submitter.

Conditional Approval: This course will be moved to full approval status with one or two items provided to panel co-chairs.  This decision does NOT require the full panel to review any additional and new information submitted.  It can be approved as soon as the panel co-chairs review information submitted.   These decisions have a time limit for responding and getting the information into the panel co-chairs.  If that deadline is missed, the course will go before the full in the following semester. Courses conditionally approved in the review process can have additional information submitted to the panel co-chairs via the iManage system by the institutional submitter.

Approved:  The course is added to the IAI database and no further action is needed at this time.
