Course Approval Criteria - IAI Psychology Major Panel

Course Review Procedures

  • A current syllabus is required. If the course has yet to be taught at an institution, a sample syllabus developed by the instructor is to be submitted.
  • The course syllabus should clearly indicate the following:
    • Course title and number
    • Prerequisites, if any
    • Credit hours
    • Textbooks used
    • Learning outcomes (objectives)
    • Topical outline
    • Methods of evaluation of student learning
  • Prerequisite: General Psychology/Introduction to Psychology must be a prerequisite for all psychology courses in the major.
  • Syllabi preparation information to facilitate approval:
    • Syllabi must include the content specified in the IAI course descriptions.

Common Reasons Courses are not approved:

  • Prerequisites other than “Introduction to Psychology” are listed. “Consent of Instructor”, “Course equivalent”, or “Permission of Instructor” are not acceptable.
  • Detailed topical outline/weekly schedule is missing or inadequate.  Topics should go beyond Chapter Numbers and titles.
  • Research methodology is not referenced in the learning/course objectives and weekly topical outline.
  • No instructor syllabus is submitted.
