    1. IAI Retreat
      1. The IAI Retreat planned by ICCB, IBHE, and IAI staff for GECC and IAI Majors co-chairs in conjunction with the administrative panels for IAI (IAI Steering Panel and IAI Advisory Committee) occurred on Friday, February 17th, at Illinois State University’s Bone Student Center. 
      2. During the meeting, the attendees discussed the course submission and review processes as well as other important IAI related items. 
      3. Some parts of the process should be reviewed and streamlined to simplify submission for our participating institutions and the review/approval process for the panel members.
      4. One exercise during the day included modifying a recent statement from J.C. Penney’s to reflect where we all want IAI to be:

      1. Legislation movement is potentially coming.  SB0059 is now gone, but there is a new similar bill being discussed.
      2. Krista asked the panel to look at course criteria and checklist.  Please have proposed changes back to the sub-committee by Friday, March 30.  Then the sub-committee will “meet” with Krista.  Krista will take proposed changed to the Steering Panel meeting May 4.
    3. Bryan & Shawn – discuss the development of a rubric that panel members could use to evaluate courses
      1. After attending the retreat, wanted to come up with a simple way to show submitters what we want from them.
      2. Document with possible edits to descriptor and checklist panel members could use while reviewing courses
      3. Try it for Fall review, see what folks think.

 

At the IAI BIOLOGY majors panel meeting on 18nov11, the panel discussed the possibility of adding a "content checklist" to the online course articulation voting form.  I (S. Meagher, panel co-chair representing 4-yr schools) agreed to provide MY list of content, to provide a starting point for discussion about the common content we should all be looking for.

IAI Major Course Description - BIO910 : Introductory Sequence for Biological Sciences Majors

(8-10 semester credits)



(A two or three-course sequence)

This combination of courses covers all the essential topics in an introductory biology sequence, including Organismal Biology, Ecology, Evolution, and Cellular and Molecular Biology. Course objectives include: an introduction to structure and function of major groups of microorganisms, fungi, animals, and plants; an emphasis on evolutionary relationships and ecological principles, and an introduction to biochemistry, molecular genetics, cell structure, function, and processes.

Laboratory required in all courses in the sequence.

To guarantee easy transfer of credit, students must complete the entire course sequence at the same school before transfer.



 

The student who completes this core should be able to:



     •Differentiate between the major taxonomic groups.


     •Explain the major concepts of ecology.

     
•Demonstrate an understanding of biological evolution.


     •Analyze the functions and interrelationships of various organismal systems.


     •Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts of cell structure and function.


     •Explain the major concepts of molecular biology and genetics.


     •Demonstrate an understanding of the biochemistry and metabolism of organisms.


     •Demonstrate an understanding of matter, energy, and organization in living systems.


     •Utilize the methods of science to identify and investigate questions relevant to biology.

     
•Demonstrate the ability to use current techniques and instruments that enable the study of organisms on the biochemical, microscopic, and macroscopic levels.

A Breath of Fresh Air

 

To our students and institutions:

 

This year, we turn 15.  We’re fine with growing older.  We’re not fine with growing stale.  So, to celebrate, we’re going to throw open the windows and let in some fresh air.

 

          We’re rethinking and reimagining, and if we find that we’ve picked

          up any bad habits over the years, we’re going to leave them far

          behind.

 

We’re simply going to treat students, institutions and their representatives as we’d like to be treated ourselves, fair and square.

 

To help students transfer, we won’t make institutions jump through hoops to go through the submission process by having their courses receive a fair review.  We won’t burden the transfer process with endless requests for more information.  We’ll have clear rationales and consistent standards. We will publish clear and objective criteria for review and let institutions know up front what we want and why.  And it won’t stop there.

 

          We’ll keep improving communication with all panels, committees and participating institutions, dreaming up new ways to make you love IAI again.  We’ll strive to make the process simpler and more effective for the benefit of students’ education.

 

We do this because we are the best transfer mechanism in Illinois.

 

We want to be your favorite transfer system. We want to be the solution, not the problem.  We want Illinois to be the national leader in articulation.
