  1.  Introductions & Technology


  1. IAI Updates
    1. Policies & Procedures Manual
      1. ICCB, IBHE, and iTransfer had a very busy summer
        1. Changes to the way IAI functions
      2. Responsibilities of all persons involved with IAI
      3. We have had conversations with all the panels – “why do you need to know that?”
      4. Our strongest support comes from CAO’s and Transfer Coordinators.  We need more of them who are active.
      5. GECC was intended to be a package.  Institutions pretty much accept courses as equivalent.  Therefore panels aren’t looking at courses as GenEds.  They are looking at as equivalencies.


  1. Ongoing Course Review
    1. Plan to create a form, in order to narrow down what is looked at. 
  2. Panel Member Term Limits
    1. Despite some unhappiness with panel members, it is time to enforce this and has begun this semester with no more than 3 or so members per semester.
    2. We are encouraged by CAO’s to bring in new faces.  Have received over 100 names.
    3. Identified panel members of 10 yrs or so with expired terms, contacted them by phone prior to their meeting to inform them that we are very grateful for their service – not meant to be a lifetime appointment, encouraged to re-submit their names if they really want to stay
  3. Changes to Individual Panels
    1. Representation on each GECC panel from each – ICCB, IBHE, iTransfer, for consistency in how panels are managed
    2. IT – not meeting this semester, will evaluate future meetings
    3. ECE – panel is forming.  Target start date for course review is Spring 2014
    4. Physical & Life Science – panel actually operated as 2 separate panels, so they have now been split into 2 panels
  4. iTransfer.org
    1. The new site will be launched late this year/early next year.
    2. The worksheet on the site that students can complete will now be available as a .pdf file that can be saved, etc.
    3. There will now be an announcement banner at the top of the homepage
    4. Panel Related Documents page will be extremely simplified – there will be a drop-down by Panel with 2 options for documents (Current or Archived).
    5. Reminders will automatically be sent out by the system each Monday for anything the user has pending.


  1. Panel Member Participation
    1. Part of the reason for enforcing term limits is an effort to get more participation.
    2. Most participants are from Community Colleges.  We need more participation from 4 yrs.


  1. GECC Updates
    1. GECC Math – Mary Wright
      1. Appreciates the ability to attend remotely
      2. A higher percentage of course approvals this semester
      3. New ISBE requirements for Elementary Ed Math is affecting panel work
      4. IMAC and ISMAA have very good course descriptions, so panel is leaning that way for IAI course descriptors
    2. GECC Life Sciences – Heidi Leuszler
      1. 38 courses submitted, 13 approved. Panel didn’t finish making final decisions on courses, will do so via conference call
      2. Future Nutrition Course Descriptor is possible
      3. Many questions – what is GenEd, etc.  Panel reviewed the definition (IBHE definition)
      4. Panel is getting rid of all forms beginning with the Spring semester
      5. Panel is working on a Generic Representative Syllabus
      6. Panel has been trying to clean up Bio – Human A & P.  Then they will declare it to no longer be a valid descriptor and end all courses.
    3. GECC Social & Behavioral Science – Lily Siu
      1. 12 members attended the meeting, both in person and online.  8 members were absent.  This is much improved.
      2. 36 courses, 21 Approved
      3. Transparency in criteria, panel is working on making clearer.
      4. Panel is creating both a 2 semester and a 1 semester history descriptor
    4. GECC Physical Science – Sam Wheeler
      1. Elected a new 2 year Co-Chair – Joy Branlund (Southwestern Illinois College)
      2. Only concern expressed by the panel regards no forms from now on.
      3. Panel is revising criteria for Spring
      4. Joy is developing an Environment Course Descriptor for Spring for the panel to review
    5. GECC Communication – Krista Jackson
      1. 10 courses
      2. Minor changes to criteria
      3. Panel is happy with current course descriptors with a few small tweaks
    6. GECC Humanities & Fine Arts – Krista Jackson
      1. 63 courses – panel didn’t finish making final decisions
      2. Remaining courses and criteria will be reviewed via conference call
      3. F 2905 will be ended – there is only 1 course


  1. Other
    1. Questions for Steering (following CCC Curiculum Diversity Committee meeting)
      1. Who can ask and to whom do they ask about requesting new descriptors from panels?  Can descriptors be modified, e.g. adding D or N to the existing descriptors?
        1. It is up to each panel
      2. Can individual courses be designated as D or N even if the descriptors are not so designated?
        1. IAI states minimum requirements to meet that designator
      3. How are the four year institutions fulfilling the general education coursework for improving human relations requirement of state law?  (This is law 110 ILCS 205/9.211 (from CH. 144, par. 189.21) Sec. 9.21 Human relations.)
        1. This item needs further discussion
      4. If we get IAI designation Bio 910 for Bio 121, can students substitute this for another GECC course?
        1. The course must be submitted for both IAI codes.
    2. IAC – long discussion – should we have all these courses in GECC?  It is, after all, a package.
      1. Panel discussion would be hard to accomplish


  1. 2014 Meetings are scheduled for Thursday, May 1, 2014 and Friday, December 5, 2014 at either ISU Alumni Center or Heartland Community College.
