Meeting Summary

  1. Welcome & Introductions

2.Panel Business

  • Panel management and membership
    • Malinda Aiello announced that she is leaving ICCB as she has accepted a new position at IBHE.  Her boss Brian Durham will manage the panel until Malinda’s replacement is hired.  He can be reached at
  • 5 Year Review Schedule – schedule for course identifiers, # pulled each semester, etc.
    • 5YR Courses were not requested for any panel for the Fall ’12 review season due to internal staffing and programming issues.  Originally the panel had planned on reviewing 25 M1 902 courses this fall and another 25 courses in spring ’13.  Since the panel has decided to write & create two new identifiers (M1 902A -Liberal Arts Stats and M1 902B – Business Stats), the panel has decided to postpone the 5 Year Review of M1 902 courses.  Instead, the panel will request and review 30 courses for the M1 906 Finite Math indentifier.
      • Steve will work on writing the M1 902A description
      • Bob will work on writing the M1 902B description
      • Both will be discussed and vetted through IMACC
    • Panel also discussed M1 903 Math for Elementary Teaching and the requirement to review / change the course in order to align with the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as well as the revised Illinois Professional Teaching Standards.
    • Malinda indicated that the state agencies (ICCB and IBHE) are working on developing a 1 day workshop to be held next spring to do a gap analysis of the CCSS compared to the IAI intro level math courses.
  • Scheduling of next meetings – Spring ’13 and Fall ‘13
    • April 19, 2013 at Heartland Community College (depending upon availability)
    • October 25, 2013 at ICCB in Springfield (may change to HCC)
  • Other
    • Paired Courses:  Triton College is looking at pairing a developmental math course with an IAI approved Statistics course.  Panel discussed concerns of doing such a thing vs. supporting innovative methods in the delivery of remedial education.  Panel decided to table this issue until it can be discussed at the Spring ’13 IMACC meeting and discussed in person at the next panel meeting.  Areas of concern or discussion included the meaning of prerequisites, co-requisites vs. prerequisites, etc.
    • Steve worked on rewriting the course description for Business Calculus (M1 900-B).  Panel discussed changes and agreed to the new course description.  Malinda posted revised course description to the IAI website after the meeting.
    • Bob indicated that IMACC will be discussing the need for a new articulation guide, and also indicated there are differences between the IMACC guide and the GECC Math panel’s descriptions.
    • During the course review process, panel members also discussed prerequisites, consent of instructor, and college algebra.
