DRAFT

A. Course Content Issues

1. A life science pre-requisite is listed for this course.

2. Course lacks a breadth of biological topics as described in the IAI course description. Courses that focus narrowly on one aspect of biological science (such as taxonomy or anatomy) will not be approved.

3. Course lacks integration of societal/personal topics throughout the course and course objectives/outcomes. The development of lifelong scientific literacy through application of biological content to societal and personal issues is considered an essential component of any general education life sciences course.

4. Labs lack an inquiry component or evidence of student engagement in scientific methodologies. The development of scientific literacy through exposure to the process of scientific inquiry is considered an essential component of any general education life sciences course with a laboratory component.

B. Submission Issues

1. A detailed topical outline is not included. A detailed topical outline must go beyond a listing of chapter numbers, chapter titles and section headers, or simple topic descriptors (i.e. “Cells” or “Genetics”). The panel needs some indication of how the biology content is approached in the course.

2. Topical outline does not provide details of how societal/personal topics are integrated. (i.e. simply stating “societal impacts of  . . .”  does not give the panel adequate information). The panel must see evidence that societal topics are integrated throughout the course.

3. Lab details are not included. A simple list of lab exercise titles or topics does not indicate to the panel what students will be doing in lab. The panel needs to see a short description of the activities that students are actually doing during each lab period.

4. Samples of three lab exercises are required when a custom or in-house lab manual is used.

5. A lecture and/or lab text is not listed.

6. Course-specific student learning outcomes or objectives are not included.

7. A current syllabus is not included.

C. Course Descriptor Match Issues

1. Botany/Zoology – the panel has determined that courses in Botany or Zoology which are primarily taxonomy and classification-focused are not appropriate matches for the L1 901 / L1 902 Plants and Society / Animals and Society course code.

2. Microbiology – the panel has determined that courses in Microbiology which are designed primarily for Nursing/Allied Health students are not appropriate matches for the L1 903 Microbes and Society course code.

3. Anatomy & Physiology – the panel has determined that 1- or 2-semester courses in Anatomy & Physiology which are designed primarily for Nursing /Allied Health students are not appropriate matches for the L1 904 Human Biology course code.

4. Nutrition – the panel has determined that courses in Nutrition which are designed for Allied Health / Dietician programs are not appropriate matches for the L1 904 Human Biology course code.

5. Applied Science courses – the panel has determined that courses in Agriculture, Animal Science, Horticulture, or similar are not general education in nature and are not an appropriate match for the General Education Life Sciences course codes.
