IAI Course Numbering System

IAI GECC Course Numbering System:

IAI has its own individual course numbering sequence for the Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC)

Here is an example of an IAI GECC course - H2 903N Non-Western Civilizations.

The first letter indicates the discipline field the course exists within. The H, in the above example, stands for the discipline field of Humanities. The disciplines and their corresponding letters are listed below:

IAI C (Communications)

IAI F (Fine Arts)

IAI H (Humanities)

IAI HF (Interdisciplinary Humanities/Fine Arts)

IAI HS (Interdisciplinary humanities/Fine Arts and Social/Behavioral Sciences)

IAI L (Life Sciences)

IAI M (Mathematics)

IAI P (Physical Sciences)

IAI S (Social/Behavioral Sciences)

The first number after the letter (i.e., the 2 in H2) indicates the sub-area of the discipline field. The H2 , in this example, is the history sub-area of Humanities. The numbers identify different sub-areas depending upon the discipline field they exist within.

The 903, in this example, is part of the unique numbering system adopted for the IAI process.

The N is for courses designed specifically to examine aspects of human diversity from a non-U.S./non-European perspective.

Other letters that are used at the end of course numbers, include:

D - Courses designed specifically to examine aspects of human diversity within the United States.

    L - Designates laboratory courses.

R - Designates research paper courses.
